Historical context

Constantius II was Roman emperor from 337 to 361. A son of Constantine the Great, he became Augustus alongside his brothers Constantine II and Constans on 9 September 337. The brothers divided the Roman Empire between them, with Constantius receiving Greece, Thrace, Egypt, and the Asian provinces. Following the death of Constantine II in 340, Constantius and Constans maintained an uneasy peace until Constans was overthrown and assassinated in 350.

Struck at the mint of Thessalonica, this large AE2 billon or bronze piece was issued under the authority of Constantius II. It bears the obverse portrait and legend "D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG" representing his brother Constans. The reverse displays Constans standing on a galley steered by a seated Victory, holding a phoenix on a globe and a standard marked with a Chi-Rho on the banner, alongside the legend "FEL TEMP - REPARATIO".
