Historical context

Constantius II was Roman emperor from 337 to 361, having been elevated to Augustus alongside his brothers after the death of Constantine the Great. During a period of repeated civil wars and conflict, Constantius elevated his cousin Constantius Gallus to the subordinate imperial rank of Caesar in 351 to rule in the east. However, Constantius had Gallus executed three years later in 354 following scathing reports of his violent and corrupt nature.

Struck at the mint of Thessalonica, this reduced AE2 coin was issued under the authority of Constantius II. The obverse presents the bust of Constantius Gallus accompanied by the title "D N CONSTANTI-VS NOB CAES", recognising his status as Caesar. The reverse depicts a helmeted soldier spearing a fallen horseman who clasps the neck of his horse, accompanied by the inscription "FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO".
