Historical context

Constantius II was Roman emperor from 337 to 361, ruling the entire empire alone after defeating the usurper Magnentius in 353. Having executed his cousin Constantius Gallus in 354, Constantius promoted Gallus's younger half-brother, Julian, to the subordinate imperial rank of Caesar in 355. Their relationship eventually collapsed when Julian claimed the rank of Augustus in 360, sparking war between the two rulers.

Struck at Thessalonica under the authority of Constantius II, this silver siliqua honours Julian as Caesar. Modern numismatists apply the term siliqua to thin Roman silver coins produced from the fourth century onward, conventionally valued at one twenty-fourth of a gold solidus. Following an imperial reform in 355, a reduced siliqua weighing approximately 2.2 grams was introduced. The coin features the obverse legend D N CL IVLIAN-VS NOB CAES, designating Julian as noble Caesar, and bears a reverse votive inscription reading VOTIS/V/MVLTIS/X enclosed within a wreath.
