Historical context

Constantius II, a son of Constantine the Great, ruled the Roman Empire from 337 to 361, having been elevated to Caesar in 324 and Augustus in 337 alongside his brothers. Following the death of his brother Constans and a civil war against the usurper Magnentius, whom he defeated in 351 and 353, Constantius became sole ruler. His reign was characterised by border warfare against Germanic peoples and the Sasanian Empire.

This AE3 bronze and billon coin was minted at Thessalonica under the authority of Constantius II. The obverse presents his pearl-diademed bust accompanied by the legend "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG". On the reverse, the coin bears the inscription "FEL TEMP - REPARATIO" alongside a scene showing a helmeted Roman soldier spearing a fallen horseman who turns to face him, with a shield lying upon the ground.
