Historical context
Constans, the youngest son of Constantine the Great, served as Roman emperor from 337 to 350, initially administering Italy, Illyricum, and Africa. After defeating his brother Constantine II in 340, he gained the praetorian prefecture of Gaul, which included the mint at Trier. Although tensions existed between Constans and his surviving co-augustus Constantius II, both emperors shared imperial rule until Constans was overthrown and killed by Magnentius in January 350.
Struck under the authority of Constans at Trier, this gold solidus was part of the high-purity coinage introduced in the early fourth century to replace the aureus, serving as the main gold coin of commerce in Western Europe. The piece features a portrait of Constantius II with the obverse legend "CONSTANTI-VS AVGVSTVS", while the reverse displays two Victories supporting a wreath inscribed "VOT/XX/MVLT/XXX" alongside the legend "VICTORIAE DD NN AVGG".
