Historical context

Constans, the youngest son of Constantine the Great, served as Roman emperor from 337 until his death in 350. Appointed augustus alongside his brothers, he originally administered Italy, Illyricum, and Africa. Following a civil war in 340 in which his brother Constantine II was killed near Aquileia, Constans secured control over the praetorian prefecture of Gaul, encompassing regions associated with the mint at Trier.

This gold coin represents the solidus, a denomination introduced in the early fourth century to replace the earlier aureus. Struck as a highly pure gold issue, the solidus served as the principal gold coin of commerce across Western Europe throughout late Roman antiquity. The obverse presents Constans with the title "CONSTANS - AVGVSTVS", while the reverse records the legend "VICTORIAE DD NN AVGG" alongside a wreath inscribed with imperial vows, "VOT/X/MVLT/XX", held between two facing Victories.
