Historical context

Flavius Julius Constans, the youngest son of Constantine the Great, was Roman emperor from 337 to 350. Appointed caesar in 333 and augustus alongside his brothers in September 337, he initially administered Italy, Illyricum, and Africa. After defeating his brother Constantine II in 340, Constans acquired the praetorian prefecture of Gaul, governing the western territories until he was overthrown and killed by Magnentius in January 350.

Struck at the mint of Trier, this Large AE2 piece was issued under the imperial authority of Constans. The obverse presents Constans with the title “D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG”, while the reverse inscription reads “FEL TEMP - REPARATIO”. Its reverse depiction shows his surviving brother and co-augustus, Constantius II, standing on a galley holding a Victory on a globe and a standard featuring a Chi-Rho, steered by a seated Victory.
