Historical context
Constans, the youngest son of Constantine the Great, served as Roman emperor from 337 to 350 alongside his brothers. Following a civil war in 340 in which Constantine II was killed, Constans acquired the praetorian prefecture of Gaul, encompassing the mint at Trier. Although tensions persisted with his surviving brother and co-augustus Constantius II, both emperors shared imperial rule until Constans was overthrown and killed by Magnentius in 350.
This bronze AE3 coinage was struck at Trier under the authority of Constans on behalf of his co-ruler Constantius II. The obverse depicts Constantius II with the legend "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG", while the reverse carries the inscription "FEL•TEMP•REPARATIO" accompanying a radiate phoenix standing upon a rocky mound.
