Historical context

This solidus was struck at Trier between AD 350 and AD 353 under the usurper Magnus Magnentius. Acclaimed Augustus on 18 January 350 after the army chose him to replace Constans, Magnentius quickly took control of most of the Western Empire. Seeking to establish his legitimacy without a dynastic tie to Constantine the Great, he presented himself as a liberator before committing suicide on 10 August 353 following defeat by Constantius II.
