Historical context
Magnentius was a Roman general of Germanic descent serving in Gaul who was acclaimed Augustus by the army on 18 January 350 as a replacement for Constans. After quickly killing Constans, he gained control over most of the Western Empire. Refused recognition by Constans's brother, the Eastern emperor Constantius II, Magnentius engaged in three years of civil war until his defeat and suicide on 10 August 353.
Struck at the mint of Trier, this Large AE2 piece dates from Magnentius's short reign, during which he sought popular support and modelled himself as a liberator from the tyranny of Constans. The obverse presents his bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust alongside the legend "IM CAE MAGN-ENTIVS AVG". The reverse carries the legend "FEL TEMP - REPARATIO" and depicts Magnentius standing on a galley holding Victory on a globe and a standard bearing a Chi-Rho on its banner, with a seated Victory steering the vessel.
