Historical context

Magnentius was a Roman general of Germanic descent who served in Gaul. Chosen by the army as a replacement for the unpopular emperor Constans, he was acclaimed Augustus on 18 January 350. After killing Constans, he took control over most of the Western Empire, though Constantius II refused to recognise his legitimacy, prompting three years of civil war that ended with Magnentius's suicide on 10 August 353.

Struck at Trier, this large AE2 billon or bronze piece dates to Magnentius's short rule. Lacking dynastic ties to Constantine the Great, Magnentius was heavily concerned with asserting his legitimacy and sought popular support across the Western provinces. The coin features his bust alongside the obverse legend "IM CAE MAGN-ENTIVS AVG", whilst the reverse carries the inscription "FELICITAS - REI PVBLICAE" and shows him standing with a Victory on a globe and a standard bearing a Chi-Rho banner.
