Historical context

Constantius II, a son of Constantine the Great, ruled as Roman emperor from 337 to 361. Elevated to Caesar in 324 and Augustus in 337 alongside his brothers, he initially received the eastern provinces. Following the overthrow and assassination of his brother Constans by the usurper Magnentius in 350, Constantius waged civil war against the usurper. After defeating Magnentius in 351 and 353, he became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire.

Struck at the mint of Trier in billon or bronze as a reduced AE2, this coin features the obverse legend "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts a helmeted soldier spearing a fallen, bareheaded horseman and bears the legend "FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO". This reverse imagery and motto were produced under the imperial authority during a period characterised by civil wars, usurpations, and continuous frontier campaigns against Germanic peoples and the Sasanian Empire.
