Historical context

Julian, a nephew of Constantine the Great, served as Caesar of Western Rome from 355 to 360 and governed Gaul successfully from that post. In 360, his soldiers proclaimed him emperor at Lutetia, and he ruled until his death in 363 during a military expedition against the Sasanian Empire. Trier, an ancient Roman city that served as an imperial capital during the Tetrarchy period, produced this reduced siliqua—a thin silver denomination introduced in the fourth century—during Julian's reign as Augustus between AD 360 and AD 363.
