Historical context

Constantine II was Roman emperor from 337 to 340, having ascended the throne after the death of his father, Emperor Constantine I, alongside his two younger brothers. He governed Gaul, Hispania, and Britain, with the city of Trier serving as one of the regional centres, having earlier functioned as a capital of the Roman Empire during the Tetrarchy. The coinage issued under his authority at Trier honoured Helena, mother of Constantine I and grandmother of Constantine II, who had served as Augusta of the Roman Empire.
