Historical context

Following the death of Constantine I in 337, his sons eliminated potential rivals and divided the Roman Empire. Constantine II, who had been raised to caesar by his father shortly after his birth in 316, ruled Gaul, Hispania, and Britain from 337 until his death in 340. This commemorative bronze issue was struck under Constantine II at Trier, a key Roman administrative centre that had served as an imperial capital during the Tetrarchy.
