Historical context

Constantine II was Roman emperor from 337 to 340, having assumed control of Gaul, Hispania, and Britain following the death of his father, Constantine I. Struck under his authority, this bronze coin was minted at Trier, an ancient Roman foundation that had earlier served as one of the imperial capitals during the Tetrarchy. Constantine II's reign ended in 340 when he was killed during an invasion of Italy.
