Historical context

Valentinian I served as Roman emperor from 364 to 375, having been proclaimed emperor after the death of Jovian. Shortly after his accession, he named his brother Valens as co-emperor, placing him in control of the eastern half of the Roman Empire while remaining in charge of the West. This bronze issue was struck between AD 364 and AD 367 at Antioch in northern Syria, an important ancient city on the Orontes River that served as the capital of Roman Syria and the seat of the comes Orientis.
