Historical context

Introduced in the early 4th century, the solidus served as the standard gold coin of the Later Roman Empire. This issue was struck at Antioch, Syria, under Theodosius I, who was appointed by Gratian in 379 following the Battle of Adrianople and ruled until 395 as the last emperor to govern the entire Roman Empire. It depicts Valentinian II, who had been raised to the imperial office at age four in AD 375, acting as junior co-ruler in the West alongside Gratian and Theodosius.
