Historical context

Theodosius I ruled as Roman emperor from 379 to 395, initially governing the eastern provinces of the empire. Appointed by Gratian following the death of Valens, Theodosius governed alongside Gratian and his younger brother Valentinian II, who held nominal co-rule in the west. This division continued the late Roman system of governance shared among multiple collegiate emperors.

Produced under the authority of Theodosius I at the eastern mint of Antioch in Syria, this bronze AE3 coinage features Valentinian II on the obverse with the inscription "D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts the helmeted Roma seated upon a throne holding a globe and spear, accompanied by the legend "CONCOR-DIA AVGGG".
