Historical context

Appointed to take charge of a military emergency after Valens fell at Adrianople, Theodosius ended the Gothic War in 382 and later became the last emperor to rule the entire Roman Empire.

Struck at the eastern mint of Antioch in Syria, this bronze AE3 coin was issued under the authority of Theodosius I. The obverse depicts the pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of the emperor alongside the inscription "D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG". The reverse bears the legend "CONCOR-DIA AVGGG" and portrays a helmeted Constantinopolis seated on a throne, holding a spear and globe with her foot set upon a prow.
