Historical context

Following the death of Valentinian I in AD 375, his four-year-old son Valentinian II was elevated to the imperial throne by military commanders, ruling the Western Roman Empire alongside his half-brother Gratian. The Eastern Roman Empire was simultaneously governed by their uncle, Emperor Valens, who had been appointed co-emperor in 364 and ruled until his death at the Battle of Adrianople in 378. This silver siliqua, bearing the bust and name of Valens, was struck between AD 375 and AD 378 at the northern Italian city of Aquileia, a major Roman urban and military centre founded in 181 BC.
