Historical context
Valentinian II was raised to the imperial office in 375 at four years of age following the death of his father, Valentinian I. He ruled as a junior emperor in the western half of the Roman Empire alongside his older half-brother Gratian, while his uncle Valens governed the eastern Roman Empire until 378. Struck between AD 375 and AD 378 at the northern Italian city and former Roman military colony of Aquileia, this siliqua represents a thin Roman silver denomination produced from the fourth century onwards.
