Historical context
Valentinian I ruled as Roman emperor from 364 to 375 after being proclaimed emperor following the death of Jovian. Although he initially governed the entire Roman realm from February to March 364, he soon appointed his brother Valens to oversee the East while he administered the Western provinces. This gold multiple was struck under Valentinian between AD 364 and AD 367 at Aquileia, a major Roman city and military colony located in northeastern Italy at the head of the Adriatic.
