Historical context
Valentinian II served as emperor in the western Roman Empire from 375 until his death in 392. Initially ruling as a junior co-ruler alongside his half-brother Gratian, he governed the West while Theodosius I ruled the East from 379. Following Gratian's death and an invasion of Italy by Magnus Maximus, Valentinian II sought assistance from Theodosius I, who defeated the usurper and re-installed Valentinian II to power.
The reverse bears the legend "REPARATIO-REIPVB" and depicts the emperor standing facing with his head turned left, holding Victory on a globe while using his right hand to raise a kneeling turreted woman.
