Historical context

Valentinian II served as Roman emperor in the western part of the Roman Empire between AD 375 and 392. Initially elevated at the age of four following the death of his father, Valentinian I, he governed as junior co-ruler alongside his older half-brother Gratian until 383. Although later sidelined by the usurper Magnus Maximus, he was eventually restored to power in 388.

This gold solidus was produced at the mint of Aquileia under Valentinian II's authority. Introduced in the early fourth century as a highly pure gold coin replacing the aureus, the solidus served as the principal gold denomination of commerce in Western Europe from late Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. The coin names Valentinian II on the obverse with the legend "D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG", while the reverse bears the inscription "CONCOR-DIA AVGGGθ" alongside a depiction of helmeted Constantinopolis supporting a shield inscribed "VOT/X/MVLT/XV".
