Solidus in gold struck at Aquileia under Magnus Maximus, AD 387–AD 388, catalogued as RIC IX Aquileia 52. Obverse: Bust of Flavius Victor, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Two emperors, of whom the one on the right is the smaller, nimbate, seated facing on throne, the smaller holding mappa in left hand and together holding globe. Behind and between them, a Victory with outspread wings; below, palm-branch. Obverse legend: D N FL VIC-TOR P F AVG. Reverse legend: BONO REIPV-BLICENATI.

Historical context

Magnus Maximus usurped imperial power in the Western Roman Empire in 383, winning recognition from Theodosius I before elevating his son, Flavius Victor, as co-emperor and augustus in either 383/384 or mid-387. In 387, Maximus invaded Italy to depose Valentinian II, prompting Theodosius I to intervene the following year. Theodosius crushed Maximus's army at Aquileia, leading to Maximus's execution on 28 August 388 and the execution of Victor in Trier shortly after.
