Historical context

Magnus Maximus was proclaimed Roman emperor in Britannia in 383 and ruled the West after usurping the throne from Gratian. In 387, he invaded Italy, which had been held by Valentinian II, but was ultimately defeated by Theodosius I in 388. This silver siliqua was struck between AD 387 and AD 388 at Aquileia, an important Roman city in northeastern Italy.
