Historical context

Valentinian II was Roman emperor in the western part of the Roman Empire between AD 375 and 392, having been raised to office at four years old upon his father Valentinian I's death. Initially serving as a junior co-ruler to his half-brother Gratian, he was later sidelined by the usurper Magnus Maximus. Following Maximus's defeat by Theodosius I, Valentinian II became sole ruler after 388, governing from Gaul.

Struck at the Aquileia mint, this bronze coin is classified as an AE4 denomination, a term modern numismatists apply to the smallest category of late Roman bronze coinage, averaging 15 mm in diameter.
