Historical context

The Roman emperors Theodosius I and Valentinian II shared governance of the Roman Empire during the late fourth century. Valentinian II ruled in the West from 375 until 392, while Theodosius I governed the eastern provinces from 379 before eventually becoming the last emperor to rule the entire empire. After Theodosius's death in 395, his sons Arcadius and Honorius ruled separate courts in the east and west.

Produced at the mint of Aquileia, this bronze AE4 piece belongs to the system of late Roman bronze denominations where AE4 designates the smallest size category. The obverse bears the portrait and name of Theodosius's son Arcadius, with the legend "D N ARCADI-VS P F AVG".
