Historical context
Valentinian I served as Roman emperor from 364 until his death on 17 November 375. After initially ruling the entire empire briefly in 364, he appointed his brother Valens to govern the eastern provinces while retaining control over the West. His reign focused heavily on securing the frontiers through military campaigns against the Alamanni, Quadi, and Sarmatians, alongside strengthening border fortifications.
This bronze AE3 denomination was produced at the mint of Arelate under Valentinian's authority. The obverse presents the emperor with the imperial title in the legend "D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts Victory advancing left, holding a wreath and palm, accompanied by the inscription "SECVRITAS-REIPVBLICAE (or.. A_E)".
