Historical context
Gratian served as emperor of the Western Roman Empire from 367 to 383, initially as the eldest son of Valentinian I, who raised him to the rank of Augustus. Following his father's death in 375, Gratian inherited the West, nominally sharing authority with his infant half-brother Valentinian II. Gratian campaigned across the Rhine and later elevated Theodosius I to govern the East in 379.
This bronze AE2 coin was produced for Gratian by the mint at Arelate in Roman Gaul. The obverse presents his portrait with the legend "D N GRATIA-NVS P F AVG". On the reverse, accompanied by the inscription "REPARATIO-REIPVB", the composition portrays the emperor standing facing with his head turned left, using his right hand to raise a kneeling, turreted female figure while holding Victory on a globe in his other hand.
