Historical context

Gratian ruled as emperor of the Western Roman Empire from 367 to 383, having been raised to Augustus as a child by his father, Valentinian I. After Valens died fighting the Goths at the Battle of Adrianople, Gratian elevated Theodosius I in 379 to succeed Valens as emperor in the East. Gratian also nominally shared imperial authority with his infant half-brother, Valentinian II.

Struck at the mint of Arelate under Gratian's authority, this bronze AE3 piece depicts the eastern ruler Theodosius I on the obverse, accompanied by the inscription "D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG". The reverse bears the legend "CONCOR-DIA AVGGG" alongside an image of Constantinopolis, turreted and seated facing with her head turned right, holding a reversed spear, resting a hand on her knee, and placing her right foot upon a prow.
