Historical context
Magnus Maximus served as an officer in Britain before being proclaimed emperor in Britannia in 383, usurping the Western Roman throne from Gratian. He gained control of Gaul the following year, while Gratian's brother Valentinian II retained Italy, Hispania, Pannonia, and Africa. Maximus ruled the Western Empire until 388, when his invasion of Italy ended in defeat by Theodosius I at the Battle of Poetovio. This bronze issue was struck during his reign at Arelate, a city of considerable importance in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis.
