Historical context

Theodosius I, who reigned as Roman emperor from 379 to 395, was the last ruler to govern the entire Roman Empire before its governance was divided between his sons. Between AD 392 and AD 395, this AE4 bronze piece was struck under his authority at Arelate, an important city located in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis. The coin was issued in the name of his younger son Honorius, who was born in 384 and later ruled the Western Roman Empire following his father's death.
