Historical context

Valentinian I became Roman emperor in 364 and appointed his younger brother Valens to govern the eastern half of the Roman Empire, while he maintained control of the West. Valens reigned over the East from Constantinople from 364 until his death at the Battle of Adrianople in 378. This silver issue, struck under Valens between AD 364 and AD 367, depicts Valentinian I, reflecting the shared imperial authority and dynastic unity between the co-emperors.
