Historical context

Valens served as Roman emperor from 364 to 378, having been appointed co-emperor by his elder brother Valentinian I to govern the eastern half of the Roman Empire. During his reign, he operated from centres including Constantinople, where he inaugurated a major aqueduct. His rule involved internal challenges, such as the suppression of Procopius, alongside external conflicts along the Danube and the eastern frontier, culminating in the Battle of Adrianople.

Struck at the mint of Constantinople, this silver coin belongs to the category known in modern numismatic convention as the siliqua. First produced during the fourth century, the denomination comprises small, thin silver coinage that succeeded earlier Roman monetary issues. The coin carries the obverse legend "D N VALENS-P F AVG" naming the emperor, while the reverse displays the votive inscription "VOT/V" enclosed within a laurel wreath.
