Historical context
Struck at the Constantinople mint, this bronze AE3 coin was produced during Valens's reign as part of the eastern imperial coinage. It bears his obverse imperial portrait with the legend "D N VALEN-S P F AVG". The reverse type pairs the legend "GLORIA RO-MANORVM" with an image of the emperor advancing while carrying a labarum and dragging a captive, a design also struck across other regional mints such as Alexandria.
