Historical context

This gold solidus was struck at Constantinople between AD 378 and AD 383, depicting the Western Roman emperor Gratian, who reigned from 367 to 383. Following the death of the eastern emperor Valens at the Battle of Adrianople, Gratian elevated Theodosius I to rule the East in 379. Theodosius subsequently governed as Roman emperor until 395, during a period in which Gratian and his eastern colleague shared imperial authority.
