Historical context

Theodosius I ruled as Roman emperor from 379 to 395, initially governing the eastern provinces following his appointment by Gratian. Operating from the eastern capital, he convened the First Council of Constantinople in 381 to establish Nicene Christianity as orthodoxy, and ended the Gothic War in 382. Theodosius was the last emperor to govern the entire Roman Empire.

This bronze AE2 coinage was struck at Constantinople under the authority of Theodosius I for Aelia Flacilla. The obverse presents her bust accompanied by the legend "AEL FLAC-CILLA AVG".
