Historical context
Theodosius I was Roman emperor from 379 to 395, initially ruling the eastern provinces while Emperor Gratian, and nominally Valentinian II, oversaw the west. Theodosius was the last emperor to rule the entire Roman Empire, and after his death, his sons Arcadius and Honorius ruled from separate courts in the east and the west.
The tremissis was a small pure gold coin introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by Theodosius I, with its name indicating its value as a third of a solidus. Struck at Constantinople, this issue features the obverse legend "D N ARCADI-VS P F AVG" depicting Theodosius's son Arcadius, alongside a reverse portraying Victory advancing right with a wreath and a cross on a globe, accompanied by the legend "VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM". Related pieces with the same reverse design were also produced at Mediolanum.
