Historical context

Theodosius I ruled as Roman emperor from 379 to 395, initially governing the eastern provinces after being appointed by Gratian following the death of Valens. During the earlier part of his reign, the western Roman empire was overseen by Gratian, who nominally co-ruled alongside his younger brother Valentinian II. Theodosius later consolidated his ties to the western imperial dynasty in 386 through marriage to Valentinian II's sister Galla.

This bronze AE2 coinage was struck at the Constantinople mint under the authority of Theodosius I on behalf of Valentinian II. The obverse features the portrait of the co-emperor paired with the inscription "D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts the emperor holding a standard and globe while resting his left foot on a captive, accompanied by the military-themed legend "VIRTVS E-XERCITI".
