Historical context
Following the death of Jovian, Valentinian I was proclaimed Roman emperor in 364. After briefly ruling the entire empire, he appointed his younger brother Valens as co-emperor, assigning him governance of the eastern provinces while Valentinian retained control of the West. This bronze coin was struck between AD 364 and AD 367 at the ancient Anatolian town of Cyzicus under the authority of Valens, bearing the portrait and titles of his elder brother and imperial colleague.
