Historical context

Valens was Roman emperor from 364 to 378, having been named co-emperor by his elder brother Valentinian I to govern the eastern half of the Roman Empire. Throughout his reign, Valens confronted ongoing internal revolts and external conflicts, including the revolt of Procopius, fighting against Persia on the eastern frontier, and campaigns across the Danube before his death at the Battle of Adrianople.

This bronze AE3 was struck for Valens at the mint of Cyzicus. The coin bears the obverse imperial title "D N VALEN-S P F AVG" paired with a reverse showing the emperor advancing, dragging a captive, and holding a standard or labarum, accompanied by the legend "GLORIA RO-MANORVM".
