Historical context
Gratian ruled the Western Roman Empire from 367 to 383. After the death of Emperor Valens at the Battle of Adrianople in 378, Gratian elevated Theodosius I to the eastern throne in 379 to manage the military emergency against the Goths. Struck between 378 and 383 at the ancient Anatolian mint of Cyzicus under Theodosius I, this bronze coinage bears Gratian's portrait, reflecting imperial solidarity between the eastern and western courts prior to Gratian's death in 383.
