Historical context
Theodosius I was Roman emperor from 379 to 395 and the last emperor to govern the entire Roman Empire. Appointed in 379 by Gratian following the death of Valens, Theodosius ruled the eastern Roman provinces during the earlier portion of his reign. He was the father of Arcadius, who along with Honorius continued the late Roman practice of imperial governance from separate courts after his death.
This bronze AE3 denomination was produced at the mint of Cyzicus under the authority of Theodosius I. The obverse features the bust of his son Arcadius, who is pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed, accompanied by the legend "D N ARCADI-VS P F AVG". The reverse depicts an emperor on horseback riding to the right with his right hand raised, framed by the inscription "GLORIA-ROMANORVM".
