Historical context

Theodosius I reigned as Roman emperor from 379 to 395, initially ruling the eastern provinces while Emperor Gratian nominally co-ruled the west alongside his young brother Valentinian II. Appointed in 379 following the death of Valens at the Battle of Adrianople, Theodosius managed military crises and ended the Gothic War in 382. In 386, an arranged marriage with Valentinian II's sister Galla consolidated relations between the imperial rulers.

Struck at the mint of Heraclea under the authority of Theodosius I, this bronze AE2 issue names Valentinian II on the obverse with the legend "D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts an emperor holding a labarum and globe with his left foot on a captive, paired with the legend "VIRTVS E-XERCITI".
