Historical context

Lugdunum, modern Lyon in France, was founded in 43 BC by Lucius Munatius Plancus and served as the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis, remaining an important city in the western Roman Empire. Valentinian I, who reigned from 364 to 375, founded the Valentinian dynasty after being proclaimed emperor following the death of Jovian. Although he briefly governed the whole empire, he soon appointed his brother Valens to oversee the East while he controlled the West, conducting campaigns on the Rhine and Danube frontiers.
