Historical context

Gratian, the eldest son of Valentinian I, ruled as emperor of the Western Roman Empire from 367 until his death in 383, inheriting the West in 375 alongside his infant half-brother Valentinian II. During his reign, Gratian conducted campaigns across the Rhine against the Lentienses before facing usurpation by Magnus Maximus in 383, eventually fleeing to Lugdunum where he was murdered. Lugdunum, situated in Gaul at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône, was an established Roman capital and home to an imperial mint.
