Historical context

Magnus Maximus served as an officer in Britain before being proclaimed emperor in Britannia in 383, and in Gaul the following year. He usurped the throne from Gratian and ruled as Roman emperor in the West from 383 to 388, while Valentinian II held Italy, Pannonia, Hispania, and Africa. After invading Italy in 387, Maximus was defeated by Theodosius I at the Battle of Poetovio in 388. This coin was minted during his reign at Lugdunum, an important Roman provincial capital in Gaul.
