Historical context

Valentinian II served as emperor in the western part of the Roman Empire between AD 375 and 392, having been raised to office at four years of age. After the usurper Magnus Maximus invaded Italy in 387, Valentinian fled to Thessalonica and secured the aid of Theodosius I. Following the defeat of Maximus, Valentinian II was restored to power and ruled from Gaul after 388.

This silver siliqua was produced at the mint of Lugdunum under Valentinian II's authority. The denomination represents a small, thin silver coin produced from the fourth century onward. Bearing the obverse legend "D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG", the issue carries a reverse depicting Roma seated on a cuirass, holding a Victory on a globe and a spear or sceptre, alongside the legend "VRBS-ROMA".
